Yeah yeah yeah, you may think it's silly to be inspired by a fictional character. But come on, Scarlett O'Hara survived the Civil War and pulled herself up from the bottom by working hard. (I'm not talking about marrying Frank for money or offering herself to Rhett, but when she was still at Tara and scrounging for food. THAT's determination.)

No matter what happened to her, Scarlett had an innate strength that kept her going. She's always been a model of strength and determination to me - when I was taking Algebra in eighth grade and was having difficulty with some of the work, I would tell myself "Scarlett survived the Civil War; you can survive Algebra" half-jokingly. (I'm not a math person at all!)

To some, Scarlett is probably the epitome of coquetteish Southern Belles, and think she's to be scorned instead of admired. If you read the actual book, you'll see that she's an intelligent woman who uses the conventions of her time to her advantage. She's aware that she's an eyelash-batting tease - and that men are generally dumb enough to fall for that. Normally I despise that sort of manipulating behavior, but you have to keep in mind the time period and expectations for men and women. I'm not excusing it - I'm just saying that's, unfortunately, the way things were during that time.

Besides, she doesn't just sweet-talk men all the time - I already mentioned the period at Tara during and after the Civil War, but she continues to be a level-headed businesswoman even when she can afford not to. And daggone, she goes through a bunch of emotional struggles and still comes out stronger than ever. When faced with Rhett's rejection at the conclusion of both the movie and the book, when all her dreams are shattered, what does she do? She doesn't crumble. She decides she will find a way to get him back. (You know the rest of the quote. ;) ) And you just know she WILL get him back, because that girl gets what she wants!

So that's my fictional inspiration.

My real-life inspiration is my brother. He has Tourette Syndrome and a mild OCD, and is thirteen. I don't know which is worse! ;) He has very obvious tics - head moving, facial movements, etc. Other kids, as you know, can be cruel. And yet - he has never had any hurtful words thrown at him. Questions, yes, but purely out of interest, not to mock. He has a bunch of friends, and gets along with everyone. He's just a happy little guy, who happens to have some extra issues.

It's his attitude that makes him such a special little guy. He just has a truly sweet disposition - he's positive, compassionate, and friendly. He's a big goofball and has a wicked sense of humor.

He doesn't define himself by his issues. Alex is just Alex. And that's how his friends and peers see him - not as a kid with quite noticeable tics, but as a kid who's kind and friendly. (He's not a wuss, though! ;) )

He's the best brother a girl could have. :)

Past Masters, Vol. 1

The Beatles

What song or lyrics are stuck in your head at the moment? What album is it from?

She's A Woman by the Beatles, from the Past Masters Vol 1 album. For years I've been getting it stuck in me head, but I've never actually heard the full song. How does that work out, you ask? Well, it's played in snippets in the Help! movie during this one scene, and it just keeps on getting stuck in my head! I finally found it on the PM album - it wasn't on any of the other CD albums I have, but it is on my parents' Beatles '65 record. :)

So yeah, long story. :)

Tomb of the Cybermen

There's no purpose to this post other than to say "Hey, isn't Tomb of the Cybermen a fantastic Doctor Who story?" I watched it again recently, and though I already knew I liked it, I was surprised to find out just how much I liked it. Yes, it's fairly campy. Yes, there's some... interesting acting (Lady who plays Kaftan, I'm looking at you!). :) And yes, there's an abundance (well, two characters at least) of amazingly fake American accents. But it's also got Patrick Troughton in top form, an extremely personable and affable Frazer Hines, and good ol' screamin' Deborah Watling ("You scream real good, Vic!").

Doctor Who - The Tomb of the Cybermen

And the Cybermen! I'll be honest here - the Cybermen creep me out, especially the 60s versions. Something about the design of those costumes freaks me out for some reason. (For the record, the only other Doctor Who monsters to "scare" me are the Ice Warriors!) Anyways. They're fairly menacing, with some great lines. "You will be like us" is a pretty frightening threat, while the Cybercontroller's response to the statement that "We're not like you" or somesuch is delivered, even through the vocal processing, in a chilling manner: "You will be." (I think it's "will," though it may be "shall." Whatever, you get the idea!)

The set design is fantastic. The shot of the Cybermen emerging from their tombs is great, and the "lobby" of the building is suitably "futuristic." Even the quarry looks

good. And the music! Well, OK, it's a bit bombastic at times, but the Cybermen "theme" is very distinctive. Very menacing, and, to me, really suits them. I may be alone in that, but I stand by my opinion! :)

There's some wonderful dialogue in this story, usually delivered by the Doctor. His "special method" for finding things out involves "Keeping my eyes open, and my mouth shut." Victoria thinks her dress is too short, but the Doctor points out, "Look at Jamie's!" Blond American Accent Guy has an amusing exchange with Victoria: "Oh, who'd be a woman!" To which he replies, "How would you know, honey?" And of course there's the lovely scene with the Doc and Victoria, talking about family: "I have to really want to, to bring them back in front of my eyes. The rest of the time they sleep in my mind and I forget. And so will you..."

All in all, a great story! :)

My first post here at Vox! I'm really looking forward to using it. :)

If you could get someone in your life to start a blog, who would it be and why?

Well, my dad has one, but I wish he'd write more often. He has really interesting things to say about politics and music and I think people would enjoy reading his opinions. :)
